Understanding Network Technology is the ultimate introductory course designed to provide participants with the fundamentals of networking.  The course covers the concepts for LAN and WAN networks, their architecture and network components.  In addition to learning the core concepts, participants will learn the purpose of protocols, networking addressing and overview of digital media.

Included in the Course

  • Engaging and Interactive LightningMod™ to prepare learner for training
  • In-depth interactive eBook modules
  • Module assessments
  • Course final exam
  • Fun VirtuGame® to improve absorption and retention of competencies

Format and Schedule

The course is delivered online via the SCTE virtual classroom, or it may be completed in 1 day (8 hours) as an onsite.

Online learners interact with web based course materials and complete assessments (quizzes) at a time that is convenient for them. Learners may also contact the instructor when they have questions.

SCTE recommends learners spend approximately 1 - 2 hours per week, on average, completing the various course activities in order to maximize the learning benefits. 100% of the schedule is determined by the learners (interacting with online materials, completing quizzes and a final exam).

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the network topologies used in the cable industry
  • Define the network operational models used in network communication
  • Explore the components found in networks
  • Understand digital numbering
  • Explain the purpose of protocols such as IP, MPEG and Ethernet
  • Define network addressing for IPv4, IPv6, DOCSIS and Ethernet
  • Describe network packet flow
  • Explore the data networking protocols such as TCP, UDP, ARP and ICMP
  • Understand TCP/IP and OSI network models
  • Identify how packets are routed in the cable network
  • Explain, in general terms, how digital media is used in the network
